- Formed in a desert area where there are rock outcrops made of alternating vertical bands of
resistant and less resistant rock lying parallel to each other.
- The bands lie parallel to the prevailing wind
- Wind abrasion erodes the softer bands move compared to the hard move resistance bands
- Deflation process carries away the loose broken rock fragmenes, (providing the wind with more
abrasive material)
- With time the bands of more resistant rock stand out as ridges, above the lowered soft, less resistant rock.
- The less resistant rocks are lowered by abrasion and deflation till they form a furrow.
- The resistant band stands out as narrow ridges called yardangs.
