- The mining of coal leaves very large scars and heaps of waste on the surface thus destroying the beauty of the landscape
- It has low calorific value when burnt only about 15% of coal is converted into power.
- When coal is burnt it produces smoke and soot leading to environmental pollution
- Coal is bulky and difficult to transport when compared to other sources of energy like petroleum or gas.
