-This is a very rapid search of some particular item of information in a text. For example, search for a name, date, statistical data/figure, an address, answer to a question, a phrase, etc.

-The essential point is that one ignores everything but the one item that one is scanning for. You need to be able to quickly scan parts of a book for items of information, which is important for your study for instance or scanning a newspaper for a news item or an advertisement. In this case, you ignore everything else written but the very item you are looking for.
