Open access

Open access means enabling free access to research information through freely available scholarly library resources. This is a significant movement in academic community that information should be free to all such as Google Scholar, Open Doar, Open Text books etc. Open access gained momentum in 2001 with the signing of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) “Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing 2003

Open access materials include

1. Publicly funded research

2. Institutional funded research

3. Literature that is provided freely by an author without expectation of payment

Examples of open access databases include

- PubMed Central – hard science

- BioMed Central


- Bioline – research from developing countries

- Open access – Freely available scholarly library resources

- African Journals Online
