A good topic sentence does two things.

a) It tells the reader what you are going to discuss in the paragraph (the topic).

b) It establishes control so that you do not wander away from the basic purpose of your paragraph (controlling idea).
In the examples below, the underlined part is the topic and the one in bold tells you what aspect of the topic the paragraph will focus on (controlling idea).
