Whereas development enables people to have a wide range of choices in such areas as health, education, politics and economics, human development not only deals with formation of human capabilities but also on the use of these capabilities in work, leisure, politics, culture and other aspects of human life. Human development thus helps in enlarging people’s choices of a healthy life, acquisition of knowledge and having access to resources needed for a decent standard of living, political, social and economic choices, freedom, creativity, productivity, self respect and guaranteed human rights.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has come up with the Human Development Index (HDI) for measuring human development. HDI is considered as a more comprehensive measure of development than GNP which measures only economic growth, thereby totally neglecting the social indicators of development.
