Altitude: It has a major influence on temperature and to some extent rainfall variations along the slopes. Low altitude areas are very warm and some experience hot conditions. In the presence of abundant moisture, these areas will have a wide variety of plants including the broad leafed trees and tall grass. The mild latitude regions on the windward sides of the mountains receive heavy rainfall and are warm. These sides of mountains receive heavy rainfall and are warm. These sides therefore support luxuriant growth of vegetation especially in the tropical rain forest.

Beyond 3000m above sea level, rainfall is less but it is cooler. At this level, coniferous forest and eventually bamboo thicket dominate. Beyond this belt, rainfall is scarce and it is cold. This altitude is dominated by Heath and moorland. Towards the mountains tops it is too cold for plants to grow.
