1. Participatory: it rejects the historically dominant top-down approach to technology
research. Farmers are highly involved in testing of technologies. It stresses understanding of the farmers’ culture, views, needs, etc.
2. Interdisciplinary: to analyse the farm as a system, a number of stake holders are involved ie farmers, researchers, extension services, NGOs, private sector, policy makers, specialized disciplines.
3. Systems perspective: The farm is viewed as system made up of various components which function together as a single unit in order to achieve the overall objectives/goals of the system. The farming system comprises of all activities of the farm household–production, marketing, processing, consumption, household chores (fetching water, firewood etc) and other farm activities. Various components of a farming system may interact with each other within the system (positively or negatively). The farm is also viewed as a dynamic system that is linked with total society and with other systems e.g education, government, and marketing.
4. The farm site is the place where research becomes practice.
5. Research findings generated on the farm with the farmers themselves are adopted and applied by the local people to their farming operation. Participation of farmers in FSR&E is a very important feature
