1. Internal efficiency
It is concerned with relationship between inputs and outputs within educational system or
within individual educational institutions such as schools.
In internal efficiency output is related to goals or dropout and retention rates, student
achievement of the curriculum objectives, etc.
An educational system or institution that exhibits lower dropout rates, lower repeater
rates, and higher retention rates would be judged to be more internally efficient.
2. External efficiency
It is a concept that is closely linked to internal efficiency. In external efficiency output
refers to the broad societal goals i.e. the objectives of the society are used to measure
external efficiency which can be judged by the balance between social costs and social
benefit or the extent to which education satisfies manpower and employment needs. The
measures of external efficiency therefore, depend on external criteria rather than results
within the school.
An education system which adequately satisfies the needs of the society e.g. by
responding to economic demand for workers by level or type of education by enhancing
the health standards of the society would be considered more externally efficient.

3. Technical efficiency
Refers to maximum output from a given set of inputs or can be said to be concerned with
the maximum output that can be achieved from a particular input of resources with a
given level of technology. By producing more output from the same inputs or producing the same amount of output with less of the input, an education system or institution is said to be technically efficient.
4. Economic efficiency
This relates output with costs. It measures the money value of inputs and outputs. The
concern of economic efficiency is with the achievement of a desired level of output at
minimum cost. Conversely economic efficiency involves productivity of more output
with the same cost of inputs.
