The central nervous system id divided into:-
- brain and
-spinal cord.

The entire CNS is surrounded by three protective layers called meninges. The meninges consist of pia, arachnoid and dura mater. The pia mater The arachnoid is a delicate and transparent membrane situated between dura and pia mater. The space between arachnoid and pia mater contain cerebrospinal fluid.

The dura mater is the external layer and is a tough white fibrous membrane which is bluish in color in the fresh state. The dura mater is continuous with the periosteum of the skull. In the spinal cord it is separated from periosteum of the vertebrae by the epidural space, which contains thin-walled veins, loose connective tissue and adipose tissue.is the innermost layer next to CNS. It is a loose connective tissue containing many blood vessels

Cerebrospinal Fluid

It is a clear colorless fluid found within the subarachnoid space, the central canal of spinal cord and ventricles of brain. It’s produced mainly in the brain ventricles by the choriod plexus which are small cauliflower-like growths found in all four ventricles of the brain. It is important in the metabolism of central nervous system and it acts as a shock absorber for the CNS during abrupt body movement.
