There are five basic types of sensory receptors;

a. Mechanoreceptors – detect mechanical compression or stretching of the receptor or of tissue adjacent to the receptor.

b. Thermoreceptors – detect changes in temperature, some receptors detect cold while others detect warmth.

c. Nociceptors – theses are painreceptors which detect damage occurring in tissues, whether physical or chemical damage.

d. Electromagnetic receptors – detect light on the retina

e. Chemoreceptors – detect taste in mouth, smell in nose, oxygen level in arteriole blood, osmolarity of body fluids, carbon dioxide concentration and other factors that make up the chemistry of the body
