It is mainly composed of bone. Bone, just like other connective tissue is composed of cells, fibers and ground substance. But unlike other connective tissue its extracellular components are calcified, making it a hard unyielding substance suitable for its supportive and protective function in the skeleton.
(Connective tissue implies tissues which connect parts of the body together. Their other main function is the formation of a packing around organs. One common feature of connective tissue is that they are composed of cells together with a matrix secreted by those cells. Blood is another example of connective tissue)
The skeleton provides for the internal support of the body and for the attachment of muscles and tendons essential for locomotion. It protects the vital organs of cranial and thoracic cavities, and it encloses the blood-forming elements of the bone marrow. It also plays important metabolic role as a mobilizable store of calcium, which can be drawn upon as needed in the homeostatic regulation of calcium concentration in the blood and other body fluids
