The typical vertebrate endocrine system is seen to consist of three principal glands or group s of glands;

a. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain and sits beneath the thalamus. It controls the pituitary gland.

b. The pituitary gland secretes hormones under the influence of the hypothalamus.

c. Peripheral endocrine glands are located in different parts of the body. They include thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, ovary and testis.
