Briefly discuss the parathyroid gland.

This is the main organ involved in the control of calcium and phosphate metabolism. Most domestic animals have four pairs of parathyroid glands that are located at the poles of the two lobes of the thyroid gland. But the pig has only one pair of the glands.

The gland produces parathyroid hormone (PTH) whose effect is to increase calcium and decrease phosphate concentrations in ECF. The release of PTH is stimulated by low levels of plasma calcium.

The hormone increases levels of Ca within plasma by acting on the bones and the kidneys. In the bone it stimulates bone resorption i.e. Ca mobilization from bone and in the kidney it stimulates the renal tubular reabsorption of Ca from the distal convoluted tubules.

In the proximal tubules it decreases renal phosphate reabsorption
