Testosterone is the main male sex hormone produced by the interstitial cells of Leydig under the influence of luteinizing hormone. Its secretion in large amounts begins at puberty.

It is a steroid hormone and its main functions include stimulation of late stages of spermatogenesis. It also promotes growth, development and secretory activity of the accessory sex organs of the male.

It also maintains secondary sex characteristics and sexual behavior or libido of the male.
