Describe avian respiratory system.

Air freely moves in and out of the air sacs, but the lungs are responsible for most of the respiration.

Both lungs and air sacs function as a cooling mechanism for the body when moisture is exhaled in the form of water vapour.

The respiratory rate is governed by the carbon dioxide content of blood. Increased levels increase the rate, which varies between 15-25 cycles/minute in resting birds.
