It contains all the nutrients required for the development of the fully formed chick. It is formed basically of three components:

i) Yolk – is equivalent to microscopic mammalian egg. It contains most of the nutrients required for embryonic development. It has a mix of protein, lipids, pigment, organic and inorganic component, and IgG (immunoglobulin G) which confers maternal immunity to the embryo.

ii) Albumen (egg white) – is secreted by the reproductive tract. It surrounds the yolk and positions it in the centre of the egg. It forms an aqueous mantle that prevents desiccation and serves as a major water reservoir for the embryo. It also contributes some proteins, vitamins and minerals to the embryo during latter development.

iii) Shell – provides protection and minerals to developing embryo. It serves to physically protect and contain the embryo during development, to allow gaseous exchange between the embryo and environment, and to act as a barrier against microbial invasion and water loss.
