a)Natural calamities: most countries suffer natural calamities such as floods and drought. These destroy farmlands and lowers crop yields
b)Pests and diseases: these have rendered many potentially productive areas useless. These areas are infested with tsetse flies and locusts. Pests which include army worms, locusts and grain borers have destroyed large quantities of food crops in the third world countries
c)Poor processing facilities: the processing facilities are poorly equipped and hence inefficient. Many processing firms do pay the farmers who supply the raw material promptly, a situation that has discouraged farmers from seeking ways of improving and increasing their yields
d)Political instability: this has diverted attention from food production in many third world countries. Most of the countries that experienced wars are depended on food imports.
e)Declining production of indigenous crops: production of disease resistant crops such as cassava, yams, sorghum and millet has declined. Farmers have opted for crops such as maize, wheat and rice without paying attention to their sustainability in the area
