Third world countries have made progress to attain food self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency however remains exclusive and a country can still import to cater for the shortfall. Briefly explain some of the measures suggested to improve Africa’s food situation.

land reclamation: this turning of wasted potential land into productive use. This can be done through irrigating arid lands, draining of swamps or clearing o bushes. The new land recovered can be availed to cultivation leading to increase in food production.
Agricultural policies: policies should be formulated from concentration on cash crops to pay more attention on food production. There should also be greater interdependence between agriculture and industry
Provision of extension services: this refers to services such as advice, research, information dissemination, storage facilities and preservation of farm produce. There should be well equipped and experienced extension officers to pass information to farmers
Research and development: there should be increased emphasis on research and development. Research can lead to the use and production of more efficient fertilizers, pesticides and machinery.
