-Type of garment-some garments require stronger sams than others and outer garments do not requires same seam as inner garments , eg pants require seams that are comfortable and lie flat

-Type of fabric-if heavy double stitched seam would be too bulky while light fabrics would be suitable. Also fraying fabrics require self neatened seams so that raw edges donot show on the right side.

-Amount of expected from the garment/ wearer of the garment,

-Effect desired-if decorative seam that shows stitches on R.S is desired then double stitched seams are attractive to use.

-style of the garment- Princess line type of style would look more enhanced if the seams were top stitched.eg use of overlaid seam, frills and yokes look attractive when they are top stitched.

-The position of the seam/ where the seam is to be done. ie. French seam is difficult to work out on curves. Eg a plain and double stitched seams are suitable for armhole seam.
