This was the first intergovernmental meeting ushering in a new phase in environmental education. This conference was organized by UNESCO in conjunction with UNEP at the invitation of USSR and was a follow- up of the Stockholm conference of 1972.
The major achievement of the Tbilisi conference was the precise description of the nature of environmental education, its aims, characteristics and strategies at all levels. The Tbilisi conference not only advocated for all efforts to be made for a definite inclusion of environmental education in the curriculum but it also agreed that the subject should use an interdisciplinary approach to give the existing school subjects a significant role to play in addressing environmental problems and providing solutions.
