i. Natural resources may broadly be classified as organic and inorganic natural resources
a) Inorganic resources are those materials, gases, liquids or solids of the earth’s components that man uses directly. Some are also used as raw materials for the production of other necessary goods. They include non- living substances such as mineral fuels, water, building stones, chemical raw materials etc.
b) Organic resources are those derived from plants and animals (living substances) found on the earth and in the sea. They include wood, natural pasture, wild game, fish etc.

ii. Natural resources may also be classified by considering their level of abundance : inexhaustible , non – renewable , renewable.
a) Inexhaustible resources are regarded as abundant that they can never be depleted.
b) Exhaustible resources are those that can be depleted. Most natural resources are exhaustible.
c) Renewable resources are those that either come from an essentially in exhaustible source like solar energy and water or those that are renewed and replenished (relatively rapidly) by natural or artificial processes. Examples of renewable resources include:- Food crops, animal life, forests, other living things and fertile soils.
d) Non-renewable resources are those that are not easily replaceable by natural processes because their rate of replacement is slower than the rate at which they are used. They are therefore vulnerable to depletion.
