(a) The formal downward communication is from superiors (Management) to
subordinates (workers). Its purpose is to:
(i) Advise workers on what to do in line with the situation at hand;
(ii) Direct – give direction on the right course of action;
(iii) Instruct – issue orders pertaining to work;
(iv) Evaluate performance with the aim of ensuring attainment of set goals;
(v) Provide information in order to facilitate execution of tasks etc.

(b) Upward communication is from subordinates to superiors. Its purpose is to :
(i) Supply information about performance (feedback);
(ii) Give suggestions aimed at improving situation;
(iii) Offer explanations with regard to happenings;
(iv) Request for aid or decisions.
