Social organization: Each family or community lived in a village called kaya
They believed in one supreme creator called mulungu
They prayed through ancestral spirits, mizimu, in times of epidemics
Prayers were offered in shrines
Circumcision was held once every four years
Boys dressed in a loin cloth, a skirt for girls, and a string of bead over the skirt for married women and a colored cloth for elders
Political organization: They had a council of elders, kambi, with a chairman
They performed rituals and officiated at ceremonies, settled disputes, passed judgment on law breakers and instructed on how to conduct rituals and customs
Economic organization: they were cultivators of coconuts, beans, sorghum, millet, cassava, vegetables and potatoes
They kept cattle, sheep and goats for dowry
They traded with their neighbors
They hunted wild pigs, bucks for meat and hides
They practiced fishing
Other activities include basketry, salt collecting and pottery
