Social organization: the families lived in stockade villages
They believed in one supreme god mulungu
Prayers were offered at dusk and at dawn
Sacrifices were offered at the village shrine in case of epidemics
Each village had its own medicine man who prophesied, made rain and officiated religious ceremonies
Adolescents were initiated into adulthood through circumcision
Political organization: adult men were involved in leadership
There were three categories of elders: the full elders called atumia ma kivala, the first elders called atumia ma kisuka and the third elders called atumia ma nzama.
The elders passed judgment, solved land disputes and presided over religious matters
Economic organization: they were mixed farmers
They hunted for meat, skin and ivory.
They gathered fruits, roots and honey
They were craftsmen famous for arrows, bows and wooden implements
They practiced long distance trade and traded with the Agikuyu and Maasai
