- A gas is proved to be nitrogen by elimination: -
It extinguishes a lighted splint and dos not burn; hence it is not oxygen, hydrogen or carbon (II) oxide.
It has neither smell nor colour; and therefore is not chlorine, ammonia, sulphur (IV) oxide or hydrogen
chloride.
It does not form a white precipitate in lime water, and so it is not carbon (IV) oxide.
It is neutral to litmus and therefore cannot be carbon (IV) oxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, hydrogen
chloride
