The names of all Alkanes end with the suffix -ane;
Examples:
Methane, ethane, propane, butane.
- With the exception of the first 4 members of the series (i.e. the 4 listed above) the names of Alkanes begin with a Greek prefix indicating the number of carbon atoms in the main chain.
Examples: - Pentane – 5 carbon atoms
Hexane – 6 carbon atoms.
