State and explain any five effects of the long distance trade to the people of the east African coast and the local communities in the interior

a) Increased contacts between the people and the interior: trading activities enhanced relations between the various Kenyan communities
b) Introduction of new items: new items were introduced both at the coast and the interior such as guns, cotton, glasses and guns
c) Opening up of the interior: the presence of the Arabs and the Swahili in the interior exposed it to foreigners. They were later followed by Europeans and missionaries
d) Emergence of powerful chiefs and kingdoms: kingdoms that were strategically located along trade routes became powerful due to the acquisition of firearms and wealth from the trade. Some individuals also acquired wealth and enhanced their positions such as chiefs
e) Spread of Islam: out of the contacts between the coast and the interior, Islam was spread to inland places such as Buganda
