Psychology may be defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes of living things (Santrock, 2003). Behavior includes physical characteristics, cognitive activity, emotional states, and social and environmental factors.
Psychology employs the scientific methods to realize its goals. These methods include being curious, skeptical, objective and critical. A person who is curious asks questions about phenomena. Being skeptical means avoiding taking things for granted. Skeptical people want to establish the truth of what is said or believed. Objectivity refers to trying to see things as they really are not just as we would like them to be. It means using methods of decision making that keep us in touch with the real world. Thinking critically consists of thinking reflectively, thinking productively and assessing the evidence. All this calls for:
- Conceptualization of a problem
- Collection of research information (data)
- Analysis of data being
- Drawing of conclusions
Many complicated process occur in the human mind including analysis and interpretation of the information the brain receives through the sensory process. An understanding of these processes helps us understand human behavior.
