Describe Signal Detection Theory.

This is the theory that explains how detection of a stimulus is influenced by observer’s expectations. It predicts how and when we detect the presence of a faint stimulus (signal) amid background stimulation (noise). Signal detection theory assumes that there is no single absolute threshold and that detection depends partly on a person’s experience, expectancy, motivation and level of fatigue. Thus detection of a stimulus is influenced by both stimulus intensity and observer’s decision-making strategy.
