Form perception is the process by which sensations are organized into meaningful shapes and patterns. One basic principle is figure-ground relationship. 0ur first perceptual task is to perceive any object called thefigure as distinct from its surrounding called the ground. The principle of perception is very useful in showing us that what we perceive is often based more on what goes on in our brain than what is in front of our eyes. For example
- When one focuses on moving thing you don’t see what is on the ground
- The words that you are writing are the figure and whiteboard is the ground
- The figure is normally in front of the ground and dominates consciousness and is more memorable than the ground
