One of the earliest theories of learning was based on the concept of association. Associating or relating two different stimuli or events in the environment may represent the simplest type of learning. Associative learning can be further broken into two types: Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning.
According to the associative theory of learning, Classical Conditions results from association of stimuli in the environment. For instance, a baby learns to associate the smell of its mother with food. Because of this association, a hungry baby will often stop crying when its mother picks it up. In Operant Conditioning, an organism learns to associate its behavior with the consequences of that behavior. A student, for example, learns that working hard usually produces good grades, and a child learns that obedience usually produces praise.
