Psychologists have demonstrated that classical conditioning is a wide spread phenomenon. Since stimuli are often paired in day to day experiences, the potential for classical conditioning is high. The sound of a dentist’s drill for instance makes many people nervous probably because it has been associated with pain. Fear can also be learned through classical conditioning. Classical conditioning is a simple form of associative learning that helps the organism to adapt to its environment.
Could criminal or antisocial behavior be learned this way too? Consider the association of wealth with power and greatness for instance, and a person feeling tempted to steal in order to be wealthy hence powerful.
