Describe extinction and Spontaneous Recovery.

If an organism responds to a stimulus but the expected reinforcer is withheld, the organism will eventually stop responding. This extinction occurs gradually. If an organism goes through an extinction session and is later taken to the operant situation again, there is the likelihood of its exhibiting the responses it exhibited before extinction. This is spontaneous recovery.

Extinction of operantly conditioned responses can occur in a variety of situations. When parents no longer pick up a baby who throws away a toy or when a teacher ignores children who show off in the classroom, they are allowing the behavior to occur without the resulting reinforcer. In each case, the undesirable behavior will eventually be extinguished. Think of possible ways unacceptable behavior, including criminal tendencies, could be effectively extinguished.
