An interesting learning phenomenon was discovered accidentally while psychologists were studying escape learning in dogs. In this study Seligman and Maier (1967) showed how dogs may actually learn to be helpless. Seligman and Maier reasoned that during the first stage of the experiment, dogs in the helpless group learned that they had no control over their situation.
Since these dogs had learned to be helpless they did not try to escape even when placed in a situation where escape was possible. This condition is known as learned helplessness. Learned helplessness also occurs in humans. Consider circumstances where learned helplessness could be advantageous and where it could be disadvantageous.
