Humans show avoidance learning in many situations. For example, have you ever known people whose behavior you simply could not tolerate? Such people might be so unpleasant that whenever you speak to them you expect to be either insulted or embarrassed. After several encounters with such people, you might go the other way whenever you see them. That is, you avoid them. In terms of avoidance learning, the behavior of these people is the aversive stimulus (like a shock) and the very sight of them is the warning stimulus. How could offenders be effectively helped to avoid committing offences?
