Encoding is the way in which the information gets into memory .Information enters the memory system through the sensory receptors. Attention operates at this level to select information for further processing. The raw sensory information that is selected is then represented – or encoded – inform of either sound, visual image, or meaning that can be used in the next stage of memory.
Automatic Processing
This is unconscious encoding of incidental information, such as space, time and frequency, and well learned information, such as word meaning.

Effortful Processing
We encode and retain vast amounts of information automatically, without any effort, other types of information, however; we remember only with effort and attention

Rehearsal
This the conscious repetition of information either to maintain it in consciousness or to encode it for storage
