1. Emotions as Motivation
Some emotions such as anger and fear are easily defined and identified by most people but others like pride, guilt, hope, etc are often more complex and more difficult to describe.
Emotions can also be mixed and contradictory and accordingly difficult to label e.g. a woman after an accident where her husband is save but her son is hurt.
Emotions can motivate us to take action e.g. fear which can lead us to avoid danger, shame, or frustrations.
The intensity of emotion is also related to motivation. The stronger the feeling the more one is likely to take action. If one feels mild irritation about a situation one may decide to let it pass but if one feels extremely annoyed he/she will probably do something to resolve the situation.
2. Emotion as Communication
Emotions are a way of communication. They remind us that something important is happening to ourselves. We communicate to others information about our internal state of interaction. The signals given are interpreted and intern influence the response to others.
If people do not communicate their feelings to their significant others, other people are left to guess what their feeling is of which they may guess wrongly. This may most likely lead to misunderstanding and hence a breakdown in communication. Emotions help us sustain our actions. They also give us awareness to inner conflicts.
