Gordon All Port (1937) was the first acknowledged trait theorist. Among his contributions was the notion of central and secondary traits, nomothetic versus idiographic research, functional autonomy, and the proprium (description of aspects of the self united under a single concept). He held that the best way to understand personality was to study an individual, then arrange his or her unique personality traits into a hierarchy with the most important and pervasive traits at the top and the least important at the bottom with the divisions: Cardinal, Central and Secondary.

According to All Port, we all generally possess cardinal traits like: honesty, hatred, jealousy, humanitarianism etc that influence nearly all areas of our lives. Central traits are specific behavioral tendencies that are highly characteristic of a person. A whole host of other bad characteristics can also be considered personality traits if you practice these things habitually.
