(i) Protecting the foetus.
The placenta prevents harmful substances/ diseases/ maternal waste/ bacteria from reaching the foetus.

(ii) Removing urea/ urine.
Waste product like urea from urine are passed across the placenta into the mother's blood.

(iii)Producing hormones.
The placenta produces hormones which regulate the pregnancy/ prepare the mother's body for child birth.

(iv) Providing nutrients.
Nutrients/ food/ water/ minerals are passed from the mother's blood to the foetus through the placenta.

(v) Providing oxygen.
The foetus gets oxygen supply from the mother's blood through the placenta.

(vi) Removing carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide from the foetus passes back into the mother's blood through the placenta.
