1. Interpersonal roles
Managers engage in interpersonal relationship by performing 3 types of roles
i. Figure head role
This role is required when activity of ceremonial nature is taking place in an organization
e.g. welcoming visitors to an organization, delivering a key not address or congratulating
newly trained personnel.
ii. Leader role
It requires involvement with the coordination and control of wok. It involves motivating
employees and providing the right leadership to higher productivity.
iii. Liaison role
Its carried out when managers make contact with other individuals who may not be
residing in the organization in order to complete the work performed by departments or
work units. This type of roles enables managers to develop networking by obtaining
external information which may be useful for completing current and future work
activities in the organization
2. Informational roles
Managers perform the following types of roles under information role
i. Monitor role
It involves continually scanning the environment or activities and events that my identify
opportunity or threats to the functioning of the work unit or the entire organization. While
marketing role can be developed through reading periodicals and reports, much of the gathering of information by managers is achieved through the network of personal
contacts.
ii. Dissemination role
Involves transmitting information gathered to the other members of the organization.
Information may be disseminated to peers, subordinates, senior superior managers for use
in accomplishing organisational activities and decision making eg information gathered
by a marketing manager may be used for planning purposes by top management
iii. Representationn role.
Managers perform this role by representing the work unit to the people inside or outside
the organization e.g. a top manager may present a case on because of the organization
before the board of directors.
3. Decisional roles
Managers perform the following types of roles under decisional role
1) Entrepreneur role
This role is performed when managers seek to improve work unit by adopting a new
technique to improve a particular situation or modifying old techniques to improve groups
or individual activities. Managers initially learn new and innovative methods to improve
their performance.
ii) Disturbance handler role
This role establishes a manager as a responder to change or disturbances affecting the
organization. Managers are often called upon to respond to unwelcome pressures.
