1) The right to safety
Consumers are entitled to protection from unsafe products. The Consumer Product Safety
Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and other government agencies have set •
safety standards for thousands of consumer products. Manufacturers must provide directions for
the safe use and proper care of consumer products. Products must also carry warning labels,
when needed. to alert consumers to potential dangers of product misuse. Consumers are
responsible for examining merchandise for safety features before deciding to buy. They must
also note warnings and follow usage and care instructions carefully.
ii) The right to be heard
Consumers are entitled to tell businesses and government agencies about problems with products
and purchases. The right to be heard covers a wide variety of issues, including discrimination,
fraudulent and deceptive business practices, and unsafe or improperly labeled products.
Consumers are responsible for letting sellers know about product or credit problems, knowing
where to go for more help with problems, and offering suggestions for product improvement.
iii) The right to be informed
Consumers are entitled to have the information they need to make informed buying and usage
decisions. Other laws and regulations require businesses to advertise truthfully, to disclose
complete costs, and to notify consumers about payment a.nd refund policies. The responsibilities
of consumers include reading and analyzing advertisements and product labels to understand
claims-and usage instructions before purchase/use, and asking for additional details or a
demonstration to make a more informed decision.
iv) The right to consumer education
Consumers are entitled to continuing education about their consumer rights. With access to
consumer education, consumers will be able to take full advantage of all their consumer rights.
v) The right to choose
Consumers are entitled to comparison shop and decide among the many products that are
available to meet their needs. This right is directly connected to the right to be informed, because
consumers cannot make choices if they don't have information about the alternatives to be
considered. Consumers are responsible for carefully selecting products and choosing the source
for their purchases. They are also responsible for understanding their own motivations for buying
and for checking more than one product or source before making a purchase.
vi) The right to service
Consumers are entitled to convenience, courtesy and responsiveness in the event of problems
with consumer products. Products should meet the quality and performance levels that are
claimed by their manufacturers. Consumers are responsible for asserting their rights to service
and for complaining when products do not meet the promised levels of quality or performance.
