(i) This covenant was made to affirm that God will fulfil His promise including that of a son.

(ii) God showed him the stars to signify the many descendants he would have.

(iii) God asked Abraham to bring the best of animals-a heifer, a ram, a she-goat all three years old, a turtle dove and a young pigeon.

(iv) He cut the three animals into two but not the birds and laid them into rows.

(v) Abraham fell into a deep sleep during which God gave him more promises.

(vi) God then passed between the sacrificed animals in form of a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch.

(vii) This was a unilateral and unconditional covenant because it is God who was to bear the consequences.

(viii) Abraham had been assured of the fulfilment of the covenant.
