Social organization:
The Somali were divided into six clans and organization was based on these clans
Boys were circumcised between the age of ten to fifteen and grouped into age sets
They believed in one god, Allah who was all powerful and controlled everyone’s destiny
The community prayed through priests to God for all their needs
Women constructed and owned huts and performed all the domestic duties assisted by the girls
Political organization:
The clans were headed by a council of elders
There was an overall chief of the entire Somali community
The position of the overall chief, the sultan, was hereditary
The age set provided the Somali community with a steady supply of professional warriors
Initiates became junior warriors and moved up to the senior warriors in the next circumcision ceremony
Economic organization:
Nomadic pastoralism was the main economic activity of the Somali
Milk was the staple food of the Somali. This was supplemented with meat, blood and grains.
The Somali were skilled woodworkers. They produced wooden headrests, wooden combs and wooden eating, drinking and storage containers
Weaving was done by women. They use a variety of vegetable fiber and animal hair to make mats
Local trade was carried out between neighboring settlements
