(ii) Aaron had been left in charge of the people.

(iii) People became impatient when Moses delayed in returning.

(iv) The Israelites pressurized Aaron to make them a god that would lead them.

(v) Aaron yielded to the people's demand and made them a golden calf.

(vi) The Israelites worshipped the golden calf, thus breaking the Sinai covenant.

(vii) This angered God who set to destroy the Israelites.

(viii) Moses interceded on behalf of the people and God relented.

(ix) Moses' intercession was not based on the people's merits but on God's faithful love.

(x) When Moses came down from the mountain, he was angry with the people and broke the stone tablets on which the Ten commandments were written.

(xi) Moses gave the Israelites a chance to choose to follow Yahweh or reject Him.

(xii) Those who chose to follow God were spared while those chose the golden calf were destroyed.

(xiii) Later, God punished the Israelites further by sending a disease upon them.
