elements react, they form a molecule of XY. The X-X bonds are as strong as Y-Y bonds.
But the X-Y bond is stronger than both X-X and Y-Y bonds.

a) Exothermic:- More energy will be released when X-Y bonds are formed than
the energy required to break both X-X and Y-Y bond OR X-Y is stronger than both XX
and Y-Y bonds.
