Soil contains film of water ; cell sap of root hair cell is more concentrated than soil water; concentration gradient is created; water enters into the root hair cell through cell wall; cell membrane into cell vacuole; by osmosis; The cell sap becomes more dilute than that of adjacent cell; similarly water passes into the neighbouring cells; the process is repeated until water is actively pumped into the xylem of the root;
