a. Economic views: influential economists such as Adam Smith advanced the arguments for a free enterprise economy. They argued that men were less productive when enslaved than as free men. These views became widely accepted as they backed by the event of time
b. American civil war: between 1861 and 1865, the USA experienced a civil war between north and south over the institution of slavery. The north which was against slavery won the war, leading to the abolition of slavery in USA
c. Slave revolts: there were frequent revolts from slaves. In Saint Domingo, slaves under the leadership of Youssaint L'Ouverture killed their masters and set up the Haitian republic. Other slave revolts occurred in Jamaica, Antigua and British Guyana
d. Contribution of Africans: leading Africans actively campaigned against slave trade. In 1526, King Nzinga Mbembe of Congo wrote a letter to the king of Portugal requesting him to stop his men from buying slaves in Congo. Olaudah Equiano, a former slave published a book addressed to the British parliament after buying his freedom in 1789. In the book, he attacked the slave trade and between 1807 and 1830, slave trade was abolished. With the abolition, the triangular trade declined
