The Tuareg: they served as guards to the caravans as they were conversant with the desert routes and protected them from hostile communities. Since they were maintained the desert cases, they helped the traders get food stuffs. They also acted as interpreters and middlemen
Existence of strong kingdoms: the strong kingdoms that were existed were Ghana, Mali and Songhai. The rulers of these kingdoms ensured that the trade prospered and that the trade routed were secure in order to gain through the tribute and taxes the traders were paid.
Existence of wealthy merchants: the wealthy merchants financed the caravans as an investment as they hoped would bring profits
The spread of Islam: as Islam spread through the region, it served to unify the traders as brothers and sisters
