Social classes: the trans-Saharan trade creates a new social class in western Sudan. This class was composed of traders and agents
Spread of Islam: the trade brought about the conversion of people of West Africa to Islam. This affected the culture and religion of the people for example the dressing, language and introduction of Islamic law
Learning institutions: the traders introduced learning institutions. They built schools and universities where Arabic literature and prophesy were taught. The kingdoms which controlled the trade routes and mines became wealthy and established areas which they used in their wars of expansion
